Travel chat with Duane Hepditch, SVP Product Marketing
From summer road trips with his mom to moving to Italy with his family for 4 months, Duane Hepditch, our SVP of Product Marketing, has always had the inclination to travel. Although his journeying has changed to mostly business travel, Duane makes every effort to enjoy the little things that every city has to offer.
How long have you been traveling? I only started travelling internationally 10 years ago. Before that it was long road trips with my mom each summer.
What do you do to avoid getting sick? I spent my summers on the water, I’m accustomed to motion sickness.
What is the best way to change currency? VISA. I rarely use cash when I’m travelling unless it’s at a café or a tip for the hotel chambermaids.
Aisle or Window? Window. I’m tall and need the extra space to stretch out. Plus, I don’t normally need to get up during flights.
Tips on how to take a nap on a plane? Window (left side of plane), Beats headphones, Pink Floyd, See you later…
What’s your favorite airline and hotel? I don’t have a favorite Airline but I’m a fan of Cathay and Air Canada’s Executive class seats. Absolute favorite hotel is The Ampersand in South Kensington, London. We go way back and they’re exceptional in everything they do.
Best way to overcome jetlag? If I’m travelling with a time zone difference of 3-5 hours I will usually take a couple of melatonin just before I go to sleep. If it’s more than 6 hours I’ll take a heavy duty Nytol to help me stay out.
What is your favorite/worst thing about traveling? I’ll admit I like shopping and exploring independent merchants in new cities. I love tasting new foods and being exposed to cultural dining habits.
What is your longest trip to date? (Number of nights and location) Longest flight is YVR to SIN (18 hours flying time). Longest trip is 4 months in Italy – Prego!!
Do you believe you do not know someone till you have traveled with them? Yes, people’s habits reveal their true self.
What is your travel horror story? In 2012, my family traveled and lived in Italy for 4 months. On our way, literally 4 hours after we departed the airport there was an issue with a drunken passenger and we had to re-route to Nunavut, which is lovely, but not at 2 am mid-March. It took 5 large men to contain the passenger while we re-routed. We waited on the tarmac for 2 hours and then another 30 minutes to de-ice the plane once the RCMP had dealt with the matter. Our adventure was only just beginning…
Favorite destination and why? Favorite place that feels like home is South Kensington. Favorite city all-round is certainly Singapore. Favorite resort destination is Four Seasons Costa Rica.
